USA Today today reports that the latest group/industry/service to receive a 21 Century "Buggy Whipping" at the hands of the internet are bike messengers. More specifically, the increasing adoption of broadband enables the emailing of larger documents that heretofore would have needed to be messengered. While there are still three dimensional items that need to be delivered the numbers of bike messengers has been cut by about 50% in recent years.
Some things that never used to be delivered are fighting to be delivered(groceries, DVDs, e-commerce retailing) and some things that were delivered are dying out(prescriptions, bike messenger documents, etc.)
Caution: Shifting world, people.
