Textually points to this interesting fabric that lights up in response to detecting a nearby powered on cellphone. While this is a prototype and only works with a specific type of cell service the idea is fantastic.
Imagine ushers in churches, conferences or theaters equipped with this type of "cellphone detector" technology that would enable them to politely remind only people who are packing a cellphone to switch it off when entering a venue. Alternately, seats themselves could react to the presence of cell phones. If your seat lights up it would be encouraging to turn off your cellphone.
While it is true that many phones have a "silent" vibrating ring option it is often the case that people actually take the call right in the middle of the movie, church service or conference session. Encouraging/enforcing the request to power off cell phones is increasingly necessary in many settings.

ST. PAUL, Minn. -- A new study has found no link between use of cell phones and the risk of developing a brain tumor. The study is published in the April 12 issue of Neurology, the scientific journal of the American Academy of Neurology.
Re the above article, not to worry. The majority of cell phone (ab)users do not have brains.
Cell phone (ab)users: unconscious, disrespectful, discourteous and obnoxious. Public transportation and areas; doctors' offices; theaters; restaurants; checkout lines; bumping into others walking in the street; and causing accidents when they drive. Name the place; they are there. Unable to bear silence or be with themselves for a moment. Totally oblivious to---and inconsiderate of---their neighbors.
Heaven help us when cell phones become as ubiquitous in airplanes as they are in those places where we are all held captive. These abusers ought to be relegated to---and locked in---their own soundproof area, obliged to listen to one another's inanities. For the entire flight.
I, and hopefully those who share these feelings, will give our business to the airlines that have the sense to ban them.
